The JRA has spent over R65 million in the construction of the Naledi-Protea Bridge in Soweto, Region D that links Modutlwa and Motingtinyane Streets in Naledi with Mdlalose Street in Protea North. The new bridge will ease mobility between the two communities.
The project began in June 2014 with Civilcon (Pty) Ltd as the appointed contractor. Of the R55 million budgeted for the bridge construction, R35 million has so far been spent.
The sod turning for the project took place on 10 June 2014 in Naledi by City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr. Parks Tau.
The Road over Rail Bridge allows freedom of movement between these two areas for both motorists and pedestrians, protecting the latter from the dangers associated with crossing the railway line.
In our own 2017 Strategy, the JRA has committed itself to SMME and Entrepreneurial Support, Sustainable Human Settlements as well as Engaged Active Citizenry. Accordingly, the bridge construction in Naledi has benefited SMMEs in the area in different stages of its development. More than 12 sub-contractors had been appointed as the construction progressed.
Additionally, the services of two local SMME contractors were being used for reinforcement steel fixing as well as bulk earthworks operations and security. Furthermore, the bridge construction project makes provision for Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) through employing locals.
Executive Cllr Mpho Parks Tau opened the bridge on 31st May 2016 establishing yet another Corridor of Freedom, eradicating the legacy of apartheid spatial planning and creating new economic opportunities close to transport corridors.
