M1 Rehabilitation at Oxford, Federation Bridges and Double Decker

The JRA is committed to providing you with quality roads that are accessible, safe and liveable. Roads and bridges form a critical part of the transport infrastructure of a growing city, and their maintenance and rehabilitation is important. As such, the JRA embarked on two projects to rehabilitate the M1 highway over Oxford and Federation bridges as well as the bridge structures and the M1 overpass bridge (double decker bridge) between Carr Street and Anderson Street as follows:

PROJECT: M1 DOUBLE DECKER SECTION

Commencement Date 5 February 2018
Estimated Completion December 2019

The works include rehabilitation and structural repairs to inter alia the following:

Asphalt Surfacing
Bridge Parapets
Expansion Joints

COncrete members in the super and sub-structures
Drainage Systems
Road Signs
Lighting

A CITY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

  • Construction projects will, unfortunately, result in short-term inconvenience to motorists, residents and the business community. The JRA will, however, attempt to keep disruptions to a minimum, increase traffic management and provide for alternative routes while construction is underway.
  • Please be patient, remain courteous and obey traffic signals during this short period of disruption.
  • The long-term benefits of a world-class M1 highway bridge network will far outweigh the temporary inconvenience during the rehabilitation phase.

PROJECT: REHABILITATION ON M1 OVER OXFORD AND FEDERATION BRIDGES

Estimated Value R 141 million
Project Scope: Rehabilitation of both Federation and Oxford Bridges as well as the re-construction of the 1km of dual carriageway between Rockridge Road and Federation Road.

In addition, the entire 3km existing stormwater drainage system was replaced between Rockridge Bridge and Federation Road Bridge on the freeway, as well as on Oxford and Federation Roads below the freeway.

Project Status Completed

#M1Rehab Q&A:

Q: Which parts of the freeway would be most affected?

A: Repairs will be done to the M1 overpass bridges – the double decker sections – between Carr and Anderson streets in the city centre. Work will include rehabilitation and structural repairs, asphalt surfacing, expansion joints, drainage systems and new road signs.

In addition, the Federation and Oxford bridges underwent major facelifts. A 2km section of dual carriage freeway between Rockridge and Federation Roads were rehabilitated and the existing storm water drainage system in the area replaced.

Q: What will be the impact of construction activities on traffic?
A: The construction activities will, inevitably, result in lane closures and traffic delays on the freeway and some connecting roads. Sections of the carriageways will be closed during peak construction periods. Commuters are advised to take special caution during night times and on weekends when construction will continue to meet the project deadlines.

We will strive to keep disruptions to a minimum and all construction will be accompanied by traffic management and signage to keep road users informed. We urge commuters to be patient, remain courteous and obey the traffic signs and instructions of officials at all times.

Q: Where can I get more information?
