The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has allocated a budget of R99 million to the improvement of roads infrastructure in Region B as part of the seven regions resurfacing programme.
The programme includes patching potholes and resurfacing of roads in areas such as, Parktown, Mayfair, Windsor, Albertville, Blairgowrie, Bryanston, Bosmont, Coronationville, Cresta, Emmarentia, Greenside, Hurlingham, Florida Glen and other surburbs.
JRA Acting Managing Director Mpho Kau said that this programme focuses on maintenance rather than construction to attend to potentially problematic road surfaces before they deteriorate and cost the city more funds. “On a daily basis, we carry out road infrastructure maintenance, including the maintenance of pavements and footways and of the storm water systems,” Kau added.
R37 million of the budget will go towards the resurfacing programme in all the suburbs within the region while R10 million will be spent on improving the storm water drain systems in Berario, Fairlands and Kelands at the Willows Bird Sanctuary.
A further R8-million will be spent on bridge infrastructure – R6-million to repair a collapsed gabion wall at Carlow Road in Melville and R2-million to repair a collapsed culvert at the Auckland Park Country Club.
The JRA will also repair the collapsed sections of the Rea Vaya BRT route in Auckland Park, collapsed culverts in Bond and Surrey Roads in Ferndale and along Barry Hertzog Road in Parktown. The programme will also include the reinstatement of junction boxes along Lange Road in Florida Glen.
