The Executive Mayor for the City of Johannesburg, Cllr. Kabelo Gwamanda and MMC for Transport, Cllr. Kenny Kunene and other dignitaries from the city, had on 20 February 2024 launched the project to rehabilitate Lillian Ngoyi Street following a gas explosion that occurred on 19 July 2024. The rehabilitation works which will be undertaken in two phases spans 1.8 kilometres from Ntemi Piliso Street to End Street. Work Package 1 focuses on a 450-metre segment, which involves the reconstruction of underground services, reinforcing the concrete channel and installing street furniture while Work Package 2 entails the rejuvenation of Lillian Ngoyi including paving and placement of street furniture in alignment with the City’s transit mall vision. Projected project completion is December 2025.
